The Lowly Concubine

The Prince of Yan's household is home to a number of concubines, all vicious as wolves and tigers. They scheme with blood on their hands, trampling others underfoot as they claw their way up. Su Hongcha is so timid she doesn't even have a place in the household's ranking. Born to be stepped on, mocked, and bullied, she is finally framed by a wicked concubine and beaten to death by the principal wife.

When Su Hongcha opens her eyes again, a shrewd glint flashes in them.

She knows that in this dog-eat-dog world, she must either fight her way out or perish without a trace.

Her choice is...

One incident after another unfolds in the prince's household: the Fourth Madam is poisoned, the Fifth Madam is bitten by a snake, and the Sixth Madam is stripped naked...

All signs point to the principal wife. In the end, she is sentenced to death, while Su Hongcha is promoted for her role in the affair.

But promotion is not her ultimate goal...

At a flower-viewing banquet, a heavily made-up woman is about to perform a clumsy imitation of the famous Rainbow Skirt Dance. She trips and falls at the crown prince's feet. He sees her lovestruck face and snarls in disgust, “You brainless fool, you don't know what's good for you. Get out!”

She bursts into tears. “Your Highness, I still can't forget you. Let me look at you just one more time...”

The crown prince fights the urge to vomit and roars, “Prince of Yan, make her disappear from my sight forever...”

The Prince of Yan drives her away like a dog.

The woman is heartbroken.

But once she's through the gate, she laughs with delight and runs off faster than a rabbit.

Excerpt One:

The moon rises above the willow branches, and lovers meet after dusk.

The man leans against a flowering branch and lifts his chin arrogantly. “Tell me, are you dressed up so beautifully tonight because your sickly husband can't satisfy you, and you've come to seduce me again?”

The woman plucks off a branch, snaps it in two, and grins. “Stop flattering yourself. Stud horses belong with stud horses. Why would a woman seduce one...?”

Excerpt Two:

A lazy, uninhibited man listens with half-lidded eyes as someone gives a report. Suddenly, he raises his brows in surprise. “What? She dares to marry someone else again?”

His subordinate is horrified, bowing his head and trembling like a leaf.

The lazy man murmurs, “That little liar dared to deceive me...”

Then he breaks into a wicked smile. “Come on! Everyone, follow me and help me steal the bride! That thieving girl won't behave, so bring her back and give her thirty hard smacks on the backside!”

Three princes vie for her, power games shake the realm, heaven and earth bear witness, and the empire is offered as a bride-price. Across past and present lives, all of it is for one smile from the woman he loves.
