Dream of the Red Chamber: Tears of a Lovesick Soul

She was born pure and would return pure, her heart as clear as ice, untouched by dust. Though years of hardship had long worn away her youthful beauty, beneath the cold moonlight she could still face the world calmly, still bravely face a lifetime of joy and sorrow. The one thing she could not face was the regret of a love that had run its course. If Heaven had not taken her so soon, would she have been willing to wash her makeup away with tears time and again, willing to let her dark hair turn white, all to hold on to an unforgettable love from this life, to the heart they had pledged to each other, and to all the things she could not let go of amid her tangled thoughts? She sighs for this mortal world: the zither strings snap, her fingers are wounded. She burns those old verses once more, leaving only the moon's shadow leaning against a lonely wall. In the years to come, who will walk into a quiet dusk, gently stroke the tearstains on the bamboo, and recall the desolation of burying flowers all those years ago? Excerpt One: “Yu'er, you shouldn't have threatened me, least of all with your life. You know perfectly well that I value you more than anything.” “Give the order to slaughter the whole city. Spare no one, old or young. Until she gives in, do not stop.” Excerpt Two: The court officials stood atop the city wall. Among them were his uncles and cousins, and the brothers who had followed him through life and death since the day they were born. As long as he refused to give his consent, each one would take up a blade and slash at his own throat without the slightest hesitation, until blood flowed around their feet. After a long silence, he said, “I agree. I hereby appoint Lin Daiyu, the thirty-second-generation descendant of the Lin family, as Imperial Tutor...” Before he could finish, he spat blood and collapsed. Excerpt Three: Dark clouds smothered the city, and thunder crashed as lightning flashed. He held her in his arms and fell to his knees. “Go ahead and kill her. I, Shui Rong, swear to Heaven that if she leaves my side by even half a step, there will be no peace in any of the Three Realms.” I've written a few scenes from later in the story as a preview.
