New Historiography·volume 19

Chen Heng Wang Liuchun

247K0

Since the profession as a whole is undergoing a "cultural turn," these questions may be relevant to all categories of historians. Now may be an ideal time to raise this methodological question. This is because in the past ten years or so, there has been a strong collision between our epistemologies, and the most fundamental foundation of knowledge has been challenged. All historians have been affected, but these changes have had the greatest impact on cultural historians, who are more interested in how history is represented than in studying structure or process, and therefore must be most affected by discussions of how history itself represents itself. Furthermore, the field of cultural historians is connected or overlaps with that of literary researchers, and in this field epistemological discussions (or at least influences) have long been prevalent. However, many cultural historians have not paid attention to this discussion. Some are troubled by these questions, recognize their importance, but feel powerless because of a lack of expertise in philosophy (a skill that is not generally considered standard in the historian's arsenal). But for me, it may not be appropriate to say that, at least most of us are exhausted at work because of these problems. Over and over again we hear assertions that know next to nothing about history and have nothing new to say, so we are prepared to make compromises and can only begin to reconstruct what we know and can say. Since we can no longer ignore the theories that history has developed so far, and we cannot adopt an arrogant attitude towards it, we can only engage in this undertaking with caution and moderation.

The Narrative Turn: an Examination of Contemporary Western Historical Theories

Peng Gang

131K0

"The Narrative Turn: An Examination of Contemporary Western Historical Theory" focuses on the theoretical orientations of Hayden White and Ankersmit, the main representatives of this turn. It analyzes the theoretical issues in the field of intellectual history research based on the case of Skinner, the leader of the Cambridge School. Combined with the development history of historical theory in the 20th century, it explores ideas for rethinking historical facts and historical explanations, and the objectivity of history in the context of the new frontier of historical theory. In the 1970s, the academic paradigm transformation occurred in the field of Western historical theory. The analytical philosophy of history that flourished after the Second World War was gradually replaced by the narrativist philosophy of history, which is still the most dominant theoretical form in contemporary Western historiography. This transformation is often called the narrative turn.

Modern Germany and Its Historians

Antoine Kiyan

172K0

Introduction to "Modern Germany and Its Historians": The 19th century was a century of history, and it was also a century in which various political trends of thought and political movements emerged in endlessly. Both Ranke, who is as calm as water, and Treitschke, who is as passionate as fire, are paying attention to the core political theme of their times - the national unification movement. Antoine Kiyan's works not only vividly depict the academic research, personality characteristics and expression style of the most outstanding German historians of that era, but also show us their passion, ambition and aspiration for real political life and public life. They conceptually reshaped the German national consciousness with their own historical research, turning Kant's "Old Germany" into Bismarck's "New Germany." However, what is the cost of this process? Antoine Quillon warned people with his uneasy prediction: What moral responsibility do historians bear when paying attention to reality and using history? Can and how can historical research achieve harmony between nationalism and cosmopolitanism, between realism and idealism?

History of History

(english) John Blow

381K0

What do people in the past find interesting about their past and why? Why do the past they pay attention to and the way they present it change? This book puts history into a social and cultural framework and details the Western thinking and expression of the past over the past 2,500 years. It shows that Herodotus advocates human merit, Thucylides values the function of history, Livy's works are full of pessimism, the Annales School cares about the "mentality" of history, etc. Many historians and works are friendly and accessible. History provides a focus of allegiance, self-identity, and "memory" to races, nations, religions, politics, cultures, and social collectives, and each history is a diagnosis of the illness of the era in which it was created. In this sense, the history of historiography is an important part of European intellectual history and an indispensable way for us to understand the past.

The Pingcheng Era of the Northern Wei Dynasty (third Edition)

Li Ping

223K0

This book gradually unfolds the study of the political history of the early Northern Wei Dynasty, centering on the capital Pingcheng, and conducts longitudinal exploration in four chapters in chronological order, accurately and clearly outlining its trajectory of change. The author's investigation has always focused on the social and cultural characteristics of the Tuoba tribe itself and the tortuous influence of Han culture on it, which are two important aspects that affect the development of the Pingcheng regime. Therefore, although what is being examined is the feudalization process of the Pingcheng regime in the Northern Wei Dynasty, its significance has transcended the topic itself and has become an important example of exploring the mutual influence and integration of the Han and nomadic peoples in the formation of the Chinese nation. In the research, the author neither avoids various major contradictions, but also uses a meticulous attitude to examine the details in detail, so the conclusion he draws is novel and convincing.

Tribute Map: the Extraterritorial World in the Eyes of the Ancient Chinese

Luoshan

117K0

During the Qing Dynasty, the main documents about foreign knowledge were "The Tribute Map of the Qing Dynasty" and "The Map of All Nations Coming to the Court". From the names of the two documents, it is easy to see that during the Qing Dynasty, the world view of the authorities and dynastic elites still followed China's ancient view of the world, and at the same time, the boundaries between civilization and barbarism were divided between Yixia and Xia. Countries surrounding China such as Korea, Annam, Siam, Sulu, Burma, Nanzhang, Brunei, and Luzon have been included in the "tributary order" surrounding Chinese civilization since before the Qing Dynasty. Qing rulers from outside the country could not only inherit and strengthen this arrangement, but they were also unable to make their own innovations. It can be seen from the "Zong Tribute Map" that the rulers of the Qing Dynasty were undoubtedly more familiar with the surrounding countries, and were more accustomed to considering themselves the center of East Asian civilization and condescendingly judging the history, current situation and social life of the surrounding countries.

Shilin's Exploration

Yang Gongle

213K0

Historical research is a very meaningful research method. This method has advantages that other methods do not have. For example, people are usually interested in past events, and interest is indispensable for researchers. In addition, historical research is flexible, that is, it does not require a fixed time and is not limited by personnel factors. It can fully combine personal interests and hobbies, thus facilitating the development of research. However, historical research also has limitations. Because history is irreproducible. Therefore, it is impossible to determine whether the same results will occur in the new situation and whether the same conclusions will be drawn as in the old situation. In addition, historical data are often difficult to collect completely, and their validity is difficult to judge. These limitations are probably related to people's own limitations.

With the support of Li Hongzhang, Shanghai gentry and merchants successively established the China Relief Society and the Southeast Emergency Relief Society to initiate, organize and implement large-scale rescues. The large-scale rescue effort initiated by Shanghai gentry and merchants and promoted by officials from all provinces during the emergency period was rare in history for its large scale, extensive mobilization, number of rescued objects, and remarkable results. The occurrence of the Gengzi Revolution and the Gengzi Rescue were not only closely related to the North-South differences in Sino-foreign trade in the 19th century, but were essentially a rescue operation based on hometown friendship. Li Hongzhang called it "started by the mutual aid of relatives and friends of each family, and expanded to the same province and the same flag. The "universal aid of officials and people" brought to the surface the previously hidden awareness of "provincial citizenship" and became the prelude to the rise of "provincial boundary" awareness during the New Deal period in the late Qing Dynasty. It was the "provincial boundary" awareness that profoundly affected the social and political situation during the New Deal period, and ultimately changed history.

Yang Nianqun

The significance of the construction of middle-range theory to the study of Chinese history can be seen in at least two aspects: First, it can help us get rid of the entanglement of grand narratives as much as possible. At present, many historical works are always grand but not detailed in their narratives. General judgments abound, and essentialist judgments are hastily formed. Only traces of people in daily life cannot be seen in them. People have become cold symbolic representations of trends and laws. The second is to discuss how to change the craftsman-style way of conducting history in the field of history, which only pulls the cart without looking at the road. The author's new publication has a long preface, which includes his reflections over the past ten years, tending towards a more integrated historical narrative.

"The Classic of Mountains and Seas" is a geographical work rich in mythology. The symbols of "gods" presented in the world of this text form the basis of its mythological quality. Therefore, exploring the categories of gods in "The Classic of Mountains and Seas" and their formation process, as well as the cultural and literary characteristics behind this god-making activity, is undoubtedly the only way to reveal the cultural and literary value of the book. Our research is mainly divided into three parts: the first is the "god" in "Shan Hai Jing" and its creation process. The second is the different mentality and methods of creating "gods" among the "gods" in "The Classic of Mountains and Seas". The third is the aesthetic pursuit of creating "gods" in "The Classic of Mountains and Seas". Analyze the formation process of the "god" symbol in "The Classic of Mountains and Seas", restore the living conditions of the ancestors, and put yourself in their shoes to reveal the formation process of the "god" symbol and the complicated reasons behind it. Discussing the god-making mentality of the author of "The Classic of Mountains and Seas" and the commonly used literary techniques for creating gods and the author's aesthetic pursuit from a literary perspective is not only the starting point of this book's research, but also reveals the potential and inherent value of "The Classic of Mountains and Seas" itself.

In this incisive, concise work, popular American history writer Barbara W. Tuchman explores the historian's craft and many historical events. It contains Tuchman's thoughtful reflections on the role of the historian, astonishing insights into America's past and present, and her penetrating observations of international events - Tuchman always looks at history in a unique way and draws lessons from what she sees. The articles in this book span more than forty years, and Tuchman touches on a series of eclectic topics: Israel, China, Roosevelt's campaign train, the Freudian interpretation of Woodrow Wilson... These talented articles condense and present the "historical skills" that he has spent his entire life pondering. Should historians be artists? The conscious use of artistic techniques should certainly be one of his tools. Macaulay described himself as half poet, half philosopher. I don't expect to reach his level in either aspect. I consider myself a storyteller, a narrator, but what I tell is true, not fiction. --Barbara W. Tuchman
