This book tells the story of modern history from the perspective of the history of foreign relations, taking the unequal treaties in China's modern history as the main line. The book is divided into three main parts, named after "Compromise", "Collapse" and "Sink" respectively. The first part is the diplomatic history between the Kangxi, Yongzong and Qianlong dynasties and Russia, taking the Treaty of Nerchinsk and the Treaty of Kyaktu as examples. The second part begins with the suppression of opium in Humen and ends with the Second Opium War. Taking the Treaty of Nanjing as the main line. The third part includes the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, the "Sino-French New Testament", the "Treaty of Shimonoseki", the Boxer Rebellion, and the New Deal in the late Qing Dynasty.
