Liu Jian was born in Jingzhao Prefecture (governing Liangliang'an, Shaanxi today) during the Five Dynasties and early Song Dynasty. In the early Song Dynasty, tired officials came to live and give up their lives. In the third year of Emperor Qiande's reign (965), Emperor Taizu of the Song Dynasty became the general magistrate and military supervisor of Sizhou. In Kaibaozhong, he was the salt and iron judge of the third division. He was ordered to participate in the compilation of "Old History of the Five Dynasties". After Emperor Taizong of the Song Dynasty came to the throne, he was promoted to Wai Lang, a member of the Ministry of War. In the third year of the Taiping Xingguo reign (978), he was ordered to jointly examine the special officials of various states with Zhang Jue and Guo Zhi. He eventually became the governor of Rongzhou. He likes to recite poetry and has a collection of poems.
