A Corner of the World: the Torn-off Calendar and Them

Zhao Yiran

17K0

I wanted to write a short book about ordinary people, not heroic epics, but ordinary people who accidentally intersected with my life path. Among them, the funny ones make people smile, the ordinary ones are almost transparent, and the evil ones send chills down the spine, but without exception, they are all dazzlingly real - such as the unemployed vagrant Xiao Man who always looks at the world through his nostrils, or Aunt Zhenzi who gets up to make noodles at three in the morning just to save more wife money for her son. I will use the simplest language to describe them, like gossiping around the stove in winter. Not deliberately exalting or belittling, but faithfully recording their demeanor, tone of voice and those subtle movements that inadvertently reveal their true temperament. Often a habitual curl of the lips or a blurted mantra hides the flavor accumulated over decades. Each article is no more than a thousand words, like a torn piece of calendar paper, capturing a certain moment in a person's life. Piecing together these fragments may reveal some truths about this era.
