The book "Legendary and Unsurprising: The World of Western Hunan Constructed by Shen Congwen" starts from the "legendary" nature of Shen Congwen's novels and analyzes the background and motivations of the "Western Hunan World" he wrote. From the historical environment of the 1930s, it also analyzes the contrast between Shen Congwen's urban narrative and the world of Western Hunan he wrote, as well as the characteristics of Shen Congwen's writing of lyrical novels as a representative of the Beijing School. Then, Shen Congwen's legendary Xiangxi novels were analyzed by comparing the similarities and differences with Faulkner in human nature, Yasunari Kawabata in aesthetics, and the continuation of Lu Xun and Jia Pingwa in terms of local narrative. This book also sorts out and explains the decline of Shen Congwen's novel creation after the 1940s, Shen Congwen's literary criticism, and Shen Congwen's psychology and life course after the founding of the People's Republic of China.
