This book is divided into two volumes, namely the study of German Romantic literature and the study of German Expressionist literature. It is the result of nearly half a century of research by two experts in German literature. Among them, the evaluation of German classicism and German Romanticism, the systematic study of Schiller and Goethe, and the evaluation and debate of German Expressionism are all issues of theoretical pioneering significance and have promoted in-depth research on German literature. The German playwright Brecht is a representative figure of "epic drama". As the proposer of the "defamiliarization" theory, Brecht has become a hot topic in Chinese academic circles for studying epic drama due to his huge influence on his dramatic works and drama theory, as well as his inextricable relationship with Chinese culture. Among these many studies, Professor Zhang Li is regarded as the authority on Brecht research.
