Within the framework of hard science fiction, the novel explores ultimate propositions such as consciousness, freedom, creativity and the purpose of the universe, and ultimately settles on a risky hope: Perhaps what the universe really looks forward to is not perfect unity, but interesting stories - the sustainability of a flawed civilization.
