This is a novel commemorating the 40th anniversary of reform and opening up. The novel takes the Dalian Economic and Technological Development Zone as the background. It describes how Li Hailiang and a large number of young people closely linked their destiny to the development of the development zone under the tide of reform and opening up. After a generation of hard work, the development zone transformed from a backward fishing village into a modern city famous in Northeast Asia. One day in 1982, Yang Xu, a young fisherman, was forced to escape in his boat due to accidental injury to others. He was later shelled by South Korean warships. Li Hailiang, a young fisherman on the boat, narrowly escaped death and ended up in the Bohai Bay area. He met a boat boss, who led the fishermen to find ways to make money, and even participated in illegal smuggling. In the end, Li Hailiang was arrested by the police and sent to the labor camp. In the labor camp, Li Hailiang won friends with his simple quality. The prisoners taught him many social experiences, and the guards also taught him many principles of life. The labor camp became a veritable life classroom, which opened his eyes and transformed him from an ignorant boy into a mature person.

This book tells the story of Bai Jianxin, the general manager of Longxiang Real Estate Company, who met Shangguan Lianjun during a brutal demolition. After not seeing each other for many years, the two changed from lovers to enemies. Bai Jianxin ordered his men to torture the evicted households in various ways, which aroused the evicted households to collectively resist the demolition, which eventually led to a murderous case in which eight people were killed. After the murder was committed, the interest group deceived Bai Jianxin to Bincheng and planned to let him lie dormant in Bincheng. The novel uses this line as a bright line, involving various game tricks of interest groups. In Bincheng, Bai Jianxin met her childhood sweetheart classmate Zhan Ping, and she only wanted to do business with Bai Jianxin, and she would do anything to achieve her goal. This is a hidden line in the novel, describing Bai Jianxin's emotional journey from childhood to adulthood. The alternation of bright and dark lines, flashbacks of the present and the past, outlines a road map since the reform and opening up. The author prefers so-called successful people who can slow down, reflect, and find a society where the poor and the rich prosper together, and everyone has dignity.
