On February 22, 1906, Jiang Zhaotang, the magistrate of Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, attended a banquet at the Catholic Church at the invitation of French priest Wang Anzhi. During the banquet, his throat was injured by a sharp knife, which triggered the burning of the church and the murder of the priest on February 3rd. This case was the last major teaching case in the late Qing Dynasty, and it was also one of the high-profile foreign-related public events in the late Qing Dynasty. The case is suspected of "priests expropriating officials", and the truth is confusing. At the historical intersection of xenophobic thoughts and xenophilia, it has aroused an uproar in Chinese and foreign public opinion. This book examines and analyzes various related narrative texts to complete a deep and three-dimensional interpretation of this historical event from the three levels of fact, cognition, and speech.
