The novel is based on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th regiments of the Yunnan Provincial Water Conservancy Construction Corps, and is set in the Second Company of Dashujiao Company of a water conservancy regiment stationed on the Nanla River in Mengla County. It narrates from the side the work and life of the educated youths of the Second Company of Dashujiao Company of a certain water conservancy regiment on the Nanla River diversion project in Mengla County from the end of 1969 to the beginning of 1974. The novel uses a simple and unpretentious technique, like an ink painting, to depict the poetic and picturesque history of the Water Conservancy Corps, a special educated youth group, in the land of Xishuangbanna. The educated youths of the Water Conservancy Corps experienced joy and sorrow in Xishuangbanna. They have shed tears, endured hardships, shed sweat, and shed blood. During the construction of the project, some were injured, some became disabled, and some gave their young and precious lives for the water conservancy construction in Xishuangbanna.
