This book is a documentary prose. By narrating the artistic life of the "mother" pendant artist Zhao Cuiting, the author simultaneously develops the "family history" and the narrative of the "pendant house" wandering during the change of political power with the "national history". Breaking away from the common narratives of suffering, by sorting out his mother's life, he dedicates himself to readers about the survival and self-improvement of the people between heaven and earth, and conducts an in-depth search of China's local society, folk culture, natural history and grassroots spirit.

"Beyond the East City" is a collection of contemporary essays, including more than thirty essays written by the author Xie Xinyuan. The work is based on the author's childhood and adolescent memories outside his hometown of Dongcheng, and narrates a series of stories about the scenery and people in his hometown, either looking back at time and expressing emotions about his hometown, or looking forward to life and moving toward the future. In the article, the author carefully builds the hometown in his memory, and almost every article is exquisite, gorgeous, and grand. It can be seen that the author brought his own thoughts and feelings when writing, and tried his best to get close to the atmosphere and color of his hometown where he has lived for twenty years. Whether facing suffering, sorrow, luck, or joy, the author faces ordinary days and twists and turns of life with a frank, authentic, and simple narrative.
