The work is set on the eve of the liberation of Dongshan Island (where the story actually takes place) in 1950, when the Kuomintang army captured young men and caused the tragedy of many families being broken and separated. It tells the story of three pairs of lovers, A Hai and A Luo, Shui Wang and A Qiao, A Sheng and Gillian, and the two brothers A Hai and A Yi. Through the images of Shi Taishan, Zhao Haifeng, Xu Ayi and other cadres who are full of family and country feelings and human warmth, the book describes the deep sympathy and humanistic care of the party and the government for the "families of military disasters" after liberation. These women who were originally struggling at the bottom of society gained human dignity. They used their actions to defend the new regime without hesitation, devoted themselves to the construction of their homes with enthusiasm, and waited for the return of their relatives with hope.
