On March 11, 1958, People's Daily published an excerpt of a long speech delivered by Chen Boda, deputy director of the Propaganda Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, who had served as Mao Zedong's secretary, at the fifth meeting of the Scientific Planning Committee of the State Council on "Learning while Emphasizing the Past while Studying the Past", revealing Mao Zedong's views on "bourgeois" intellectuals.
