"The Battle of Wits" is Zhang Biwu's first full-length detective novel, and also the first full-length "Hawthorne Detective" fan novel during the Republic of China. It was serialized in the famous popular fiction journal "Half Moon" in the Republic of China from September 16, 1921 to August 23, 1922 in Volume 1, No. 1 To No. 24 (Serialized 22 times in total, of which No. 10 And No. 16 Were not published).
