This was a concentrated burst of Lu Xun's suppressed romantic passion. He wrote eight imaginative short stories based on ancient myths and historical legends. The protagonists of the novel include heroes from ancient myths, such as Hou Yi who shot the sun, Nu Wa who created humans, and Dayu who controlled the floods, as well as ancient saints and sages, such as Confucius, Laozi, Mozi, and Zhuangzi. They all have some sacred auras about them. Lu Xun had a sudden thought: If such heroes and sages with sacred auras one day walked among the common people and became ordinary people, gods became human beings, and saints became ordinary people, what strange encounters and strange fates would they have? The entire "New Story" revolves around this weird imagination. Lu Xun's leading scholar Qian Liqun interprets each chapter, leading us into Lu Xun's true spiritual realm.
