In June 1940, the Ministry of Education of the National Government established the Northwest Art and Cultural Relics Inspection Group, with Wang Ziyun as the leader and a staff of 12 people. Most of the members were students who graduated from the National Hangzhou Art College. Ms. He Zhenghuang, who had just returned from the Higher Art Major in Tokyo, Japan, also joined the group. The task is to conduct an inspection of art and cultural relics in northwest Shaanxi, Gansu, Qinghai and other provinces, focusing on Dunhuang, to lay a solid foundation for protection. This is the first Dunhuang inspection conducted by the government in the history of our country. It is also the first time to use modern scientific methods and technical means to comprehensively investigate and clean up the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang.
