On a sultry afternoon in the summer of 1981, Shi Chunyu, a young man from the Sixth Production Team of the Chenjiaqiao Brigade of Hongyang Commune, sat under the tallow tree by the river, hunched over his skinny body and dozing off with his dark face buried in his knees. The flies used his exposed limbs as runways, rising and falling on them. Yesterday, a sudden thunderstorm not only drenched him in the spring rain, but also gave him a cold. He was suffering from a high fever, his voice was hoarse and he had no strength at all.
