"The Past of Tao" describes the love, hatred and resentment of three generations, with many characters and twists and turns in the story, dealing with school and family. The novel begins with poetry. Poetry represents idealism, and the novel is idealistic but not divorced from reality. There are six and a half poems in the novel, including three surrealist poems by French poet Jacques Prévert (1900-1977) translated by Wei Zhen WillNox, namely "Jardin", "Le Cancre" and "Alicante" (the three poems appear in the French textbook Reflets and Taxi, Hello, French!).
