This book explores the translation, performance and canonical dissemination of Shakespeare, that is, Shakespeare's plays, from the perspective of modern Chinese thought. It aims to explore the in-depth interaction between Shakespeare and Chinese politics and thought during the modern transformation period, and discuss the role of Western culture in modern China's national narrative and personal discourse, as well as the proposition of how Shakespeare, as a foreign ideological resource, takes root in China and serves the construction of Chinese thought and culture. This book examines Shakespeare's influence in modern China and China's acceptance of Shakespeare from the perspective of semiotics and communication from the perspective of modern Chinese thought. It explores Shakespeare and modern China from the translation and introduction of early Shakespeare plays in China, performances, literary history writing and curriculum, and the cultural choices of Chinese scholars. By exploring the connection between Western culture and modern Chinese national narratives and personal discourses, and through subtle insights into the modern transformation of Shakespeare's dramas and Chinese dramas, we will conduct an in-depth analysis of the process of how Shakespeare's plays sprouted, took root, and influenced China as foreign ideological resources. Starting from a review of the study of Shakespeare in China over the past century, it discusses the translation and introduction of early Shakespeare plays and the construction of the modern Chinese nation-state, the performance of early Shakespeare plays and the rise of modern thought, early Shakespeare reviews and the cultural tendencies of modern Chinese intellectual circles, and Shakespeare and the transformation of modern Chinese thought. It conducts in-depth and comprehensive demonstrations on several aspects such as the ideological connection between Shakespeare and individual artistic creation. It closely follows the internal relationship between Shakespeare's plays and the ideology, politics, and culture of Chinese society, and can conduct a comprehensive analysis of mutual understanding and mutual support in the translation, performance, and research of Shakespeare's plays.
