Illusory ideals and harsh reality At the end of 1968, my classmates and I came to Shanxi and settled in a village called Changsheng. The year I went to jump in line, I was 16 years old. There are more than 20 students from the same village who jumped in line. I had some extremely naive ideas about going to the mountains and countryside. Before going to the countryside, I participated in student agricultural labor in the suburbs of Beijing. At that time, going to the mountains and countryside was a life choice that we had to seriously consider. In a quiet farmhouse courtyard on the outskirts of Beijing, I met several educated youths who had just settled down. I find their unrestrained pastoral life quite romantic and very attractive. I also read "Border Song", a novel about young people supporting border areas, which also gave me wonderful thoughts about my future life of jumping in line.
