Inkstone Lamp

Inkstone Lamp

Short Fiction

Vermicelli Tea Restaurant

15K01

In the "Ming Kee Ancient Book Restoration Shop" in London's Chinatown, the third-generation shop owner Lin Yan guards two family heirlooms - a green inkstone engraved with Lingnan bamboo patterns, and a bilingual account book stained with tea. The restoration commission from the city hall put her in a dilemma: should she erase the tea stains and ink marks on the account books according to "Western standards", or should she retain the traces of her grandfather's "life together" with the British apprentice Tom? The blue pattern inkstone hides unexpected answers. Whenever Lin Yan touches account books and old prescriptions, the inkstone will reflect the past: in 1960, his grandfather taught Tom to write the word "", in 1959, he used Chinese herbal tea to cure the cough of a Western doctor's daughter, and in 1985, his parents wrote her name in both Chinese and English in the shop. These cross-cultural warm moments gradually solved her identity confusion - it turned out that what her grandfather left behind was never "pure tradition", but a "cultural bridge". When the inkstone broke, the tissue paper hidden at the bottom of the inkstone surfaced, and my grandfather's handwriting revealed his original intention: "Culture is not a wall, but a bridge." The tea stains in the account book, the English notches on the inkstone, and Tom's old notebook eventually became the stories in the showcase. This "lamp on the inkstone" illuminates my grandfather's ink, Tom's candy, and Lin Yan's choice to use writing as a sail to meet on the bridge on different days.
