Tianjin Municipal Archives

In the modern history of Tianjin, there have been 9 special concessions including British, French, Japanese, German and Italian. The number of countries designated and the large area of the concessions are unique in the country. The concession had a significant impact on China's modern history and is an important topic in historical research. The Tianjin Municipal Archives has a systematic and rich collection of complete archives of the concession. This project has been included in the 2016 National Social Science Fund project. It is planned to publish 5 volumes in the form of proofreading and compilation, with each volume containing 1 million words, totaling 5 million words. This project is extremely valuable first-hand information for studying the history of Tianjin, the history of the concessions, and the history of modern China. The British Concession in Tianjin was one of the earliest and latest concessions to be established among the nine-nation concessions. In 1902, Britain and the United States made a private agreement to include the American Concession in Tianjin into the British Concession as the "Southern Expansion". Therefore, combining the British and American Concession files into one volume is consistent with historical facts. This volume supplements the missing content of previous archives and books on the British and American concessions through systematic archival mining, and the content is very precious.
