In August 1975, a flood ravaged the Central Plains. The protagonist of the story, Jean Guohao,'s hometown of Ningyang County was severely affected, but his village was not in danger of life. He was only 5 years old at the time and saw the disaster relief plane flying low over the village. He found that there were characters on the fuselage that he didn't recognize, so he came up with the idea of going to school to learn how to read. The story begins when he meets a disaster victim who came to seek refuge in the village.
