Facing major changes unseen in a thousand years, the Qing Dynasty terminated the imperial examination system that had been followed for thousands of years, and changed the life path of the majority of students who studied and excelled to become officials. Along with the turbulent political situation, a group of scholars walked out of the county school and started their own different life journeys: some have gone through hardships, but their hearts are bright; some are seeking office by any means; some do not distinguish between right and wrong, and pursue fame and fortune for fun. The protagonist distinguishes right from wrong in a chaotic political situation, is still kind to others, sticks to the bottom line, and helps those in need even in times of disappointment and despair. He continues to explore ways to save the country and the people in times of hardship, and ultimately grows from a scholar in troubled times to a determined Communist Party member.
