This book takes the "New Woman" image constructed by the modern women's liberation movement in China as the research object. It combines the relevant remarks of the late Qing Dynasty intellectual elites, multiple feedbacks from newspapers and public opinion, and related novels and texts showing the image of the "New Woman". By sorting out the external reasons and internal motivations for the formation of the modern women's liberation movement, this book strives to show the complex aspects of how the intellectual elite, often male intellectual elites, have absolute say in the construction of the "New Woman" image, and how the majority of female groups cope with, break through, and grow under the multiple intersections of nationality and gender. By sorting out, integrating, and interpreting the construction, imagination, and practice of "new women" both inside and outside literary writing in the late Qing Dynasty, it will help us form a more coherent, profound, and comprehensive understanding of the modern women's liberation movement more than a hundred years ago.
