The novel adopts a "six-volume structure", with each volume corresponding to a secret realm, a growth, and a trial, just like "six catastrophes." Six volumes of secret records, six realms of darkness; where they walk is the boundary between life and death. The protagonist, Chen Mo, is a graduate student in folklore. After his mentor mysteriously disappeared, leaving a notebook containing various unsolved mysteries and mysterious legends, he embarked on the road to find his mentor and explore the truth. He met a Miao girl with magical powers and a veteran who was proficient in Feng Shui and Kanyu. The three of them formed a "tracing team" and went deep into unknown and dangerous secret places such as Changbai Mountain Tianchi, Taklimakan Desert, Yunnan Worm Valley, and Qinling Ancient Tombs. They encountered various bizarre events and mysterious creatures, uncovered the veils of ancient civilizations, and finally discovered that the truth behind the mentor's disappearance was related to a mysterious organization trying to use ancient power to subvert the world.
