The work is set from the 1930s to the 1960s. It tells the story of several young Northwest Associated University students in those turbulent years. With the concept of "taking science as their own responsibility", they lived in the countryside of Guluba in southern Shaanxi during the arduous days, studied hard, served the motherland, and composed a remarkable song of youth that was not in vain. After graduation, they successively arrived at the rear city of the Rear River during the war. Then, in the raging socialist construction, they dedicated their enthusiasm with full passion, and also paid a silent heaviness. The deepest part of the soul may be a place that can never be reached.
