Xihaigumanji
Literature西海固漫记
Qian Junhua
Xihaigu - located in the Loess Plateau area in the southern part of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, including Guyuan, Xiji, Haiyuan, Longde, Jingyuan and other cities and counties. Although Haiyuan was approved by the State Council on December 31, 2003, and was administratively placed under the jurisdiction of Zhongwei City, Xihaigu has become an inseparable regional name in people's memory, and it was once recognized by UNESCO as one of the least suitable areas for human habitation. However, in such a place, there are devout Hui Muslims living. They have been multiplying for generations and taking root in such a desolate and barren yellow land that has been drought for nine years. How do they survive? In April 2004, mainland scholar Qian Junhua came to Xihaigu at his own expense and lived in Laoya Village, Zhengqi Township, an all-Hui village, for nearly a month. Within a month, the author interviewed more than a hundred Muslims, witnessed many strange and wonderful things that shocked him, collected a large amount of first-hand information, and took more than 500 photos.
