The story tells the story of the protagonist Huang Baqiang who fled from Shandong to the East with his parents when he was young and settled in Toudaohe, Jingshan County, Longjiang Province, where he grew up and matured. After graduating from high school, he returned to his hometown to work in farming and experienced firsthand the hardships faced by farmers with their faces facing the loess and their backs facing the sky, as well as the hardships of lack of food and clothing. With the guidance and help of his fourth grandfather, Huang Baqiang became the head of Toudaohe at the age of 20. He led the villagers to work hard and engage in side businesses to generate income, which improved the villagers' lives to a certain extent, but they still could not get rid of poverty.
