"Seven Swords and Thirteen Heroes" (also known as "Seven Sons and Thirteen Lives") written by the novelist Tang Yunzhou in the late Qing Dynasty is a representative work of chivalrous novels in the late Qing Dynasty. The novel was well received by readers after its initial publication and had an important influence on modern martial arts novels. The novel describes the story of twelve heroes including Xu Minggao, Xu Qing, Luo Jifang, Yizhimei, Di Hongdao, Wang Neng, Li Wu, Yang Xiaofang, Bao Xinggong, Zhou Xiangfan, Xu Shou, and Wu Tianxiong during the Zhengde period of the Ming Dynasty (1506-1521). They robbed the rich and helped the poor, acted chivalrously, joined the battlefield, and suppressed the rebels. The book can be divided into three parts. The first part is about the heroes who performed chivalrous acts and eliminated harm for the people in Gusu City, Jinshan Temple, Feilong Ridge, Zhaowangzhuang and other places; the second part is about the heroes who followed the censor Yang Yiqing to quell the rebellion of King Anhua of Gansu; the third part is about the heroes who followed the censor Wang Shouren to annihilate the bandits in Jiangxi, Fujian and other places and put down the rebellion of King Ning of Jiangxi.
