Mountain Sign

Mountain Sign

Short Fiction

Origin Of Evil

75K0

On the last weekend of summer vacation, six twelve-year-old boys, Teng, Chen, Yu, Hong, Hong, and Bao, met to climb an unknown mountain outside Hupo Village. On the way up the mountain, they found a stone slab inserted diagonally into the soil, with a license plate number engraved on the bottom: Hai A·F744K. When the stone slab was lifted, the license plate disappeared, but on the way down the mountain, the same license plate appeared every few dozen meters - carved on tree trunks, nailed to tree stumps, painted on stones, extending down the mountain like road signs. On the dirt road at the foot of the mountain, an old white Santana was parked quietly. The door was wide open and the driver's seat was empty. There is a red cloth strip tied to the rearview mirror, and a transparent pendant hangs on the center console with a photo embedded in it - a photo of Bao and his uncle Wang Jianjun. Paul recognized the coat hanging on the back seat, which was exactly what his uncle usually wore. It's dark. There were sounds of stones rolling down the mountain and heavy footsteps, and the six children hurriedly got into the car and fled. There was a crumpled piece of paper taped to the dashboard, with three words crookedly written on it: Go to the station. The car drove to an abandoned long-distance bus station. Paul walked into an old building following the wooden sign of "Guest House" and heard his uncle's voice in Room 208 on the second floor. Pushing the door open, there was no one. There is a mobile phone on the bedside table. The call interface shows that a call to "Bao" is being made, and the call duration is still beating. When Bao picked up the phone, his uncle's voice came from the other end: "Don't look for me."
