Old Things in the Fields

Old Things In The Fields

This is a collection of essays about rural areas in southern Fujian. With Liu Liang's delicate writing style, he recalls his childhood memories in the 1990s. In the book, the author stares at his disappearing hometown and fishes out the pearls scattered in time among the fields, streams and old houses. The whole book is composed of dozens of independent short essays, including an indifferent examination of the impermanence of life and death - from the death of ancestors to the legend of "coffin water" in the village; and a tender look back at the barren years: the sour smell of growing mushrooms, the itch of harvesting sugar cane, the sweat under the bitter melon shed, and the accompaniment of the "squeaking" of a wheelbarrow. The fragrance of rice coming out of the stone mill and the reunion under the raincoat during the rainy season together outline a vivid and heavy folk custom picture. The author does not shy away from the "absurdity" of childhood: voyeurism, pranks, sneak fishing, and the loyalty with his friend Fatty under the grape trellis. In these rough realities, there is hidden the most primitive tenacity and brightness of life. With the invasion of industrial civilization, dirt roads have turned into parking lots, cattle mud pits have been filled in, and the clear streams in memory have dried up. This is not only a personal nostalgia note, but also a spiritual elegy for a generation. In the text that interweaves humor and sadness, the author records the last appearance of the village before it was swallowed up by the torrent of the times, allowing those silent fathers, loyal old dogs and silent land to gain eternal rebirth in the text.
