Haiyan climbed up and down the Old Summer Palace almost every day to maintain the equipment that had been in disrepair. In early autumn, the French advance delegation in Beijing set off from Xishiku to Guangzhou. Haiyan traveled with the delegation as a translator and attendant. From the Old Summer Palace to the Seine River, driven by fate, they met in Paris and experienced the turbulent and soul-stirring years in French history.
