Returning Guests from Shanghai

Meiling Is Unique

37K0

It tells the story of Huang Jing, a marketing elite who returned home from Shanghai due to business failure. She originally wanted to sell her ancestral home but ended up taking root in the countryside and revitalizing Liangtian Village with her childhood sweetheart Liu Banxia. The most touching thing about the novel is that it describes a "double return". The first aspect of Huang Jing's return is the return of space: from Shanghai to the Jiangxi countryside, taking the green train, trampling vegetable seedlings on the muddy village road, and the displacement of space constitutes the superficial plot. But even more profound is the second return-the spiritual homecoming. At the beginning of the novel, Huang Jing calls himself "Huang Jing" when writing an envelope. In his later years, he promises to bring glutinous rice sugar. At the end of the novel, he becomes an honorary villager, husband and father of Liangtian Village, saying, "My heart rests here." These forty years form a complete character arc, which narrates not only running away, but also how a modern person re-understands the meaning of "roots". Grandma Liu's phrase "The root is not the house, but the heart. The heart is here, the root is here", which expresses the theme. It is worth noting that this return is not a one-way binary narrative of "city falling, country sublime". Huang Jing's e-commerce thinking, live broadcast skills, and brand strategies brought from the city are precisely the core driving force for the revitalization of Liangtian Village. The countryside is not a closed utopia, but an open space that coexists with contemporary business models.
