The story revolves around the growth of the abandoned baby Shen Lian. Veteran Xu Guolin (Azu) took over the abandoned child from his son when she was three months old, named her "Chen Lian", which means "God's most beloved child", and shouldered the burden of raising her alone. When Shen Lian was one year old, Azu used his birthday as an excuse to invite old comrade Zhang Jianjun, retired teacher Chen Jingwen, retired worker Wang Tieshan and Zhang Jianjun's wife Li Xiulan to gather together, quietly letting everyone know and accept Shen Lian. Since then, the five old people have done their best to care for her growth: Azu taught her integrity and responsibility, Zhang Jianjun protected her, Li Xiulan gave her gentle companionship, Chen Jingwen enlightened her knowledge and structure, Wang Tieshan taught her pragmatism and perseverance, and jointly established three correct views for her. During this period, the puppy Ah Huang became her childhood playmate and spent countless hours with her. Although Shen Lian was troubled by gossips from classmates when she was growing up, she became better and better with the encouragement of the elderly. But happiness never lasts forever. During her freshman year, Azu died suddenly of a heart attack. Li Xiulan, Zhang Jianjun, Chen Jingwen, and Wang Tieshan also passed away one after another, and Ahuang also followed the old people. Nowadays, Shen Lian is alone, but he always adheres to the teachings of the old people and works hard to live. She often goes to the cemetery to visit her deceased relatives, talk about their current situation and thoughts, carry their love and expectations, bravely move forward on the road of life, and remember this warmth and inheritance for her whole life.
