Karen Horney believes that the inner conflict of individuals that produces neurosis does not exclude personal characteristics such as sexual repression, genetic endowment, and childhood experiences, but it essentially comes from the influence of a certain social and cultural environment on the individual. Human nature, various tendencies and pursuits of people, the repression and frustrations that people suffer, the inner conflicts and anxieties of people, and even the standards of what is a normal personality and what is a pathological personality, all of these are different due to different cultures and times. This idea has been formulated in the book "The Neurotic Personality of Our Times".
