Romain Rolland (1866-1944) was a giant of French literature in the 20th century, a humanist who pursued peace and light throughout his life, and one of the most familiar foreign writers to Chinese readers. He pays great attention to Eastern civilization, especially China's history, culture and the great changes it is undergoing. He was particularly enthusiastic and caring about Chinese young people studying in France. They began to communicate with each other in 1920, always replied to their letters, took time to meet, encouraged and guided their ambitions, provided specific guidance on writing and translation, and generously responded to urgent financial requests. This relationship lasted for twenty years and was not interrupted until World War II. However, this beautiful history of cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries has been rarely recorded due to historical changes. As time goes by, it has been almost forgotten. The author of this book, Liu Zhixia, has lived in France for a long time. In recent years, he has traveled to the Manuscript Department of the French National Library, the French National Archives, the Dusselt Literary Library in Paris and other places to search for ancient diaries, letters, photos, printed matter and other precious documents. The details of Lan's interactions with nine Chinese young people, Sheng Cheng, Jing Yinyu, Liang Zongdai, Li Youran, Yan Zonglin, Wang Deyao, Fu Lei, Gao Changhong, and Zhang Hao, describe the impact of their interactions, and keep this rare story in the history of world literature in the twentieth century in this book that never tires of seeking truth.
