Liu Shanben: the First Person of the Kuomintang to Fly an Uprising

Liu Jiangping

15K0

Flying to Yan'an, my father flew a plane to revolt. On June 26, 1946, it was raining continuously over Yan'an. A US-made B-24 heavy bomber broke through the difficulties and obstacles, swaying its wings from time to time, passed through the thick clouds, and slowly landed on the simple airport in the wind and rain. The captain flying the plane was my father Liu Shanben. At the critical moment when he was about to take over as the captain of Chiang Kai-shek's special plane, the "Meiling", his father was a captain and flight staff officer of the Eighth Battalion of the Kuomintang Air Force. He chose to defect to the light and flew to Yan'an, setting a precedent for the Kuomintang Air Force personnel to fly in an uprising. Premier Zhou Enlai repeatedly praised his father as "a flag for the Kuomintang air force's uprising." Inspired by this flag, hundreds of people from the Kuomintang Air Force flew in to revolt.
