An Examination of Body Aesthetics in the Han Dynasty

Liu Chengji

For a long time, the Han Dynasty has been a weak link in the study of Chinese aesthetic history. This book uses the body as the entry point to reconstruct the understanding of Han Dynasty aesthetics. The author believes that the cognition of the body in the aesthetics of the Han Dynasty is divided into five levels, namely establishing the philosophical foundation for body cognition with the theory of vitality and nature, defining the essential composition of the body with the theory of form, spirit and bone, constructing the relationship between the body and the world with the theory of symmetry between heaven and man, recreating the social nature of the body with rituals, music and clothing, and expressing expectations for the immortality of the body with health preservation and lavish burial. With this as a background, this book further explores the contribution of the Han Dynasty's body concept to the aesthetics of the Wei and Jin Dynasties. It believes that the theory of literary spirit in Wei and Jin literature, the theory of form and spirit in painting, and the theory of muscles and bones in calligraphy are all extensions of the body theory of the previous dynasties to the field of art; the Han Dynasty's examination system is the historical motivation for the formation of the style of Wei and Jin people.
