This book is the first academic monograph in China on the study of the ancient Roman poet Horace. The first chapter discusses the relationship between art and politics in Horace's works. Octavian tried to integrate literature into the imperial order, but Horace tried his best to maintain the independence of art. The second chapter examines the patronage system and literary circulation methods in the Augustan period, specifically the support of Macenas and the influence of literary colleagues such as Virgil on Horace's poetry creation. The third chapter focuses on the poetics of Horace. He inherited the concepts of the Alexandrian poetic school in the Pan-Hellenic era. At the same time, he greatly admired ancient Greek poetry and fully absorbed the Roman tradition represented by Virgil. Chapter 4 explores Horace's artistic techniques, especially the impersonal tendency of lyric poetry, the dramatic device of satirical poetry, the dialogic nature of the work's structure, and the art of displacement and fusion. Chapter 5 mainly interprets Horace's poems with philosophical themes, analyzing the Golden Middle Way thoughts and main philosophical themes.
