I started writing novels when I was eighteen years old. The content was based on the deeds of the Anti-Japanese War. The war was not long over at that time, and the novels were quite popular. Later, I traveled far away in anger and wandered around for most of my life. The stories I saw, heard, friends and myself accumulated more and more, and they all became the material of this novel. I am a low-end person and have been exposed to low-end people throughout my life, so I write mostly about small characters. I feel that small people also have their own tragic stories. Although they (she) are not saints in my writing, they are good people that I love in my heart. They are much more lovable than rich and powerful officials and hypocritical gentlemen. Some people criticize me for preferring to use Cantonese. Most of the people I write about are Cantonese. How can I describe people in detail without using Cantonese? Ding Ling's "The Sun Shines on the Sanggan River", Han Ziyun's "Flowers of the Sea", and Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea" all contain many dialects, but they do not damage their literary value. I agree with this view.
