At the beginning of the 20th century, Shijiazhuang was a small village under the jurisdiction of Huolu County. From 1902 to 1907, the Beijing-Hankou Railway and the Zhengtai Railway passed through it. Shijiazhuang "prospered because of the road" and became a "city brought by trains." Its development has gone through the process of starting from scratch and growing from small to large, and is a typical case of rural urbanization in modern China. The urbanization process of Shijiazhuang in modern times started late and had a low starting point. The urban development centered on the railway hub and gradually spread to the surrounding areas. After the traditional city's political and military functions, two new urban functions emerged - trade distribution and industrial manufacturing and processing. Industrial and commercial enterprises started at the same time, giving Shijiazhuang's economy a characteristic of "heavy commerce and light industry".
