They are a group of farmers, also called old rural party members before the founding of the People's Republic of China. Their average age is more than 80. They are known as the "red group" by people today. During the war years, some of them were front-line models, presidents of the Women's Rescue Association, and sisters in literacy classes; some were militiamen, members of the Children's League, and some were veteran soldiers with outstanding military exploits who had emerged from the flames of war. They sewed military uniforms, collected military shoes, delivered military rations, protected their fellow soldiers, cared for the sick and wounded, and even braved the hail of bullets to charge into battle; in peacetime, they worked in the fields all their lives, adhering to their beliefs, and their true character remained unchanged.
