"Essentials of History" is a work by Li Dazhao, the founder of the Communist Party of China. It embodies Li Dazhao's views on historical materialism in a relatively concentrated way. It initially uses the Marxist worldview and methodology to explore six topics: what is history, what is history, the system of history, the status of history in science, the relationship between history and related knowledge, the research of modern history and its impact on life attitudes.

The work originates from the author's lectures at Peking University. It systematically expounds historical materialism and is China's first important historical theoretical work that combines historical materialism with specific historical research. The book promotes the Marxist view that history is human life and the culture that is its product; and human history is a vast activity that includes all social life phenomena. This book points out the direction for the creation of a new Marxist historiography and lays the foundation for the development of Marxist historiography in China.
