This is a story about the ultimate failure of educated youth to integrate into the countryside in the 1960s and 1970s. Liu Tong, the son of a teacher and an urban educated youth, suffered setbacks during the Cultural Revolution. As a single educated youth, he jumped into the queue and was sent to the countryside, like a leaf floating to Yaoling, a small rural village in the south. Yaoling is experiencing a climax of criticism. The people of Yaoling are digging graves and breaking with their ancestors. They do not want their own history, and they also deny the history of their family. Liu Tong longed for revolution in his heart but acted passively. He was ignored by the brigade and fell into the bottom of life in Yaoling. He is both a bystander and a new resident of Yaoling. He comes into contact with all kinds of people in Yaoling. He gradually learns about the history of Yaoling, builds up his memory of it, and thus integrates into Yaoling.

"Ninety-nine Songs of the Long River" is a collection of cultural prose, which includes 25 prose works created by the author, divided into two series: "The Stars are Brilliant" and "The Grasses are Rich". The author takes his hometown Shangyou County in Jiangxi Province as the writing landmark, carefully studies the history and culture, geographical environment, social development, and various characters of Shangyou County, and writes from different angles to show readers a comprehensive and charming Shangyou.
