Northern Drifting Dust

Laugh When You Are Happy

52K0

My name is Chen Mo, I am thirty-two years old and have been living in Beijing for eight years. Eight years ago, I dragged a 20-inch suitcase and walked out of Beijing West Railway Station in the July heat wave. The sun above my head was several degrees higher than that of my hometown. In front of me was the endless flow of people and traffic. I had a well-known saying in my heart: Beijing can accommodate all dreams. At that time, I thought that my dream had a concrete shape - a job that worked from 9 to 5, with a decent salary, room for advancement, and a job that would allow me to gain a foothold in this city. But over the past eight years, I have changed more jobs than I can count on both hands, from white-collar workers in office buildings to temporary workers on the streets, from glamorous industries to positions that no one cares about. Like a speck of dust blown away by the wind, I have settled in every corner of Beijing and left in a hurry, but I have never touched the edge of "satisfaction."
