This book takes the human relationship novels of the late Ming Dynasty as the research object, takes the existence of individual life as the logical starting point, and shows the inward exploration process of life through the evolution of "emotion", from the awakening of "lust" to the proliferation of "desire" and then to the return of "reason". The investigation of late Ming culture from the perspective of life existence shows the process of opposition and integration between Confucian orthodox ideology and secular popular culture. In a series of contradictions between reason and desire, sensibility and rationality, nature and sociality, how individual life can achieve coordination between the two, that is, a unity of aesthetics and ethics, is not only a historical issue, but also an important task in constructing a new ideology and value system in contemporary society.
