"Modern" and "Unknown" - A Study of Late Qing Science Fiction" takes late Qing science fiction as the research object. Through a careful reading of several representative works, it examines how the late Qing intellectual elites worked hard to learn modern views of history, science and technology, and time and space, and applied them to explore unknown things such as the future, space, and the soul. From this, it was discovered that: they dreamed of absorbing new knowledge to innovate local culture, and at the same time used local wisdom to criticize and transcend colonialism. This effort to integrate China and the West leads them to the depiction of a harmonious world, and the various unexpected and bizarre plots in these depictions reveal their struggles and dilemmas between China and the West, the new and the old.
